Still More Newspapers
I’m back with more!
Originally this was going to be part of my section on newspapers in the east. However, there were so many Brooklyn papers that I figured they deserved their own writeup.
Once again, these papers all come from June 10, 1908.
Brooklyn Daily Eagle
There’s an obvious choice here:
No, I don’t think that 1/2 credit coupon is still good.
This one has the biggest weekday sports section we’ve seen so far:
I haven’t taken the time yet to reconstruct that cartoon in the middle.
Again, there’s a bunch of good stuff here, such as Bill Mack joining the Cubs right on June 9th. Mack would pitch for the Cubs twice in July before fading back into obscurity.
The Brooklyn Citizen
There are other options in Brooklyn, by the way.
The sports section here isn’t bad for the penny press:
I don’t suppose you think you could win this, right?
The Standard Union
There’s also The Standard Union:
In this case, the sports section is a bit lacking:
The Brooklyn Daily Times
We’ve got one more.
You’ll find this paper listed under “Times Union” in the Brooklyn, New York section on newspapers.com.
I can’t blame them for wondering if Brooklyn would ever win again.
Brooklyn has a great tradition of baseball....it's worth going back to these papers for some good history! From the mid 1800s until the Dodgers left is some great reading. Some of my favorites are the articles leading up to the 1947 season. The "Durocher Says" columns have got to be a first...until Happy Chandler banned him and put an end to that one...keep up the good work :-)
