1975 Baseball Card Convention
While researching something else, I came across this quaint old 1975 Sporting News article:
A few notes:
This isn’t just about baseball cards. There is mention here of all sorts of sports memorabilia, including old baseball guides, buttons, pennants, and even uniforms (see the picture).
I wonder what happened to the guy who owned the old Ebbets Field seats.
Some of the things mentioned here, such as the 1940s baseball guides and the 1910 Johnny Evers book, aren’t actually all that scarce or valuable.
Some of the other prices seem insane. $75 for a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle in mint condition is an insanely good price even if you adjust for inflation. If you spent $1,700 on a complete 1952 Topps baseball card set in 1975 and managed to maintain its condition and not sell for 50 years, you’d be quite rich.
Even back in those days, collectors were interested in error cards and other odd variations.
$25 per table for dealers is more than a fair price, especially when you consider that admission cost a whopping $1.50. You could still attend major league games in 1975 for that $1.50.
