5 Things I Hate About OOTP
I’ve been playing a lot of OOTP lately - and there are a few things that drive me nuts about the game. Here are 5 things that I dislike - and all of these are things that should be easy to fix.
The 3D Game Engine
OOTP’s 3D engine has improved a lot over the past few years. But there are still quite a few problems, in particular with animations that are completely unrealistic. After a few games, you can usually tell what is going to happen from the start of the animation - something that was not true of early graphical baseball sims, such as Microleague Baseball and Tony LaRussa Baseball.
Compounding this is the fact that you can’t search for a specific play in a specific game. If you want to see every play using OOTP’s “replay” system, you have to watch through the entire game.
Confusing Menus
The settings menus in OOTP are extremely confusing and aren’t well organized at all. It’s nice to have a game with numerous settings — but somebody really needs to sit down and organize things again. There are at least 3 different setting screens for “players,” and it’s not sure what belongs where.
The Stats
OOTP does a good job at accumulating statistics. However, not all statistical screens are customizable. It’s difficult to tell which fields you can sort by, and it’s very difficult to understand why certain statistics are not present in the game.
Camera Angles
It’s great to have a game with camera angles that you can customize. However, it’s not clear how the game engine decides to use each camera angle. The default camera angles result in far too many closeups. Removing the closeup camera angles, however, mean that the end of certain plays are not visible. I don’t understand why OOTP can’t provide its users with a guide to how all of this works.
Baseball Cards
Most OOTP players seem unaware of the baseball card feature, which has been part of OOTP for years. It’s a nice feature, though its design is clunky. All “cards” are created as very low quality files, and there isn’t anything you can do about it. It’s surprising that this feature hasn’t been updated in so long, considering how helpful it could be for advertising the game.
