A Mistake?
I’ve been slowly playing through a 1993 Philadelphia Phillies replay using Diamond Mind Baseball.
I’ve been kind of quiet about this project, in large part because I’ve been pretty slow about it. I’m still looking for the right groove, I suppose.
Anyway, I think I made a mistake the other day. I’d love to know what the rest of you think about this.
I’ve reached late April 1993 (told you I was going slow). John Kruk was out for a few days. However, on April 29th there were more players out with injuries than I first realized.
I’ve been trying to do things the “right way,” by reading original daily newspapers as I play and trying to get deep into the mood. However, I wasn’t aware of the extent of Philadelphia’s injuries for that game until after I played it. The problem is that this article wasn’t printed until April 30:
Now, the thing you’ve got to understand is that I haven’t been limiting myself to the original as-played lineups. I’ve been loading them, but I’ve mostly been using them as a suggestion. Part of the reason is because Juan Bell is actually playing quite well for me. Another part of the reason is because I actually want to feel like I’m managing the team, not just that I’m going through the motions to replicate what Jim Fregosi decided to do in real life.
However, I didn’t know about the extent of those injuries, as you can see from the boxscore:
I mean, I guess it’s not as bad as it could have been. I’ve been doing a somewhat extreme platoon in hopes of putting all left handed and switch hitters out there against right handed starters. Seminara sure didn’t last long, and he threw a whopping 45 pitches in the first inning.
But Mickey Morandini probably shouldn’t have been out there, right? At least I left Inky on the bench.
Anyway, what do you think? Is this the unpardonable sin?

Constructing lineups based on actual season stats is a form
of cheating. Constructing lineups based on current stats or the previous season’s stats is acceptable. A little harsh? Probably.
It’s your replay, do it the way you want to do it.
