Another Marathon
I’m not quite sure what the best way is to describe this one.
Cleveland beat New York, 4-2, in 13 innings. It was a crazy game, as evidenced by the boxscore:
We had no fewer than 8 sacrifice bunts in this one — and that only counts the successful ones!
There were rare plays all over the place — plays like this one, where a bunt allowed a runner to move from first to third:
There were also numerous unsuccessful sacrifice bunts. Cleveland, for example, initially failed in its attempt to score the go-ahead run in the top of the 9th. Cleveland had runners on second and third with one man out, but Joe Birmingham missed the pitch when he tried to bunt:
Later, with one out in the top of the 11th, George Perring came up with the bases loaded and attempted to bunt — only to have his bunt result in an out at home:
Jake Stahl of the Highlanders also missed a bunt in a clutch situation in the bottom of the 11th — also with runners on second and third:
Hal Chase had a chance to win it after Cleveland scored two in the top of the 13th. However, he didn’t exactly live up to his billing:
I’m not quite sure how else to describe this one. There were 22 hits in 13 innings along with 6 errors, and yet the final score was only 4-2. We might not have seen any home runs, but we did see 3 triples and 4 doubles to go along with our 8 bunts.
I mean, this marathon was indescribable. I recommend watching the YouTube video.
