Bargain!
At 60 cents for a bleacher seat, this game would have really been a bargain.
Boston and Cleveland went into the 10th inning tied at a run each. After Lou Boudreau started the 10th off with a single, Larry Doby came up:
Joe Gordon, the former Yankee, was up next:
That made for one out. Up next came Mickey Vernon:
That made it a 3-1 game. Cleveland tacked on one more run after that, going into the bottom of the 10th with a commanding 4-1 lead.
But that wasn’t all.
After a Dom DiMaggio walk with two men out, Ted Williams came up:
You never want to walk anybody at the top of the Boston lineup. If DiMaggio doesn’t make you pay, Williams will. And if it’s not Williams, it will be Vern Stephens, who was up next:
And that was that.
Satchel Paige got the single out for the save. And don’t look now, but the Cleveland Indians are making a move for first place.
