Big Bats
This wasn’t much of a contest.
The St. Louis Browns and Philadelphia Athletics are duking it out for bragging rights in the American League. The Athletics find themselves in first place; the Browns are only a game and a half behind.
I was expecting all sorts of things to happen. However, I never thought we’d get an offensive explosion like this one:
Rube Vickers couldn’t get out of the 3rd inning. He allowed 8 runs, 6 of which were earned, en route to an embarrassing loss.
I never would have guessed that the first place Athletics would be confined to a single run on 5 hits, nor that they would give up 13. I mean, this is 1908, right?
I guess it goes to show you that you never know.
Other Action
Naps 4, Red Sox 0: At Boston, the Red Sox fans went home disappointed after Addie Joss shut down the home town heroes on 7 hits. Watch the game here.
Tigers 6, Highlanders 1: The Tigers demolished Jack Chesbro in Hilltop Park, exploding for 17 hits. Ty Cobb went 3 for 5 with a double, bringing his average up to .304.
Browns 13, Athletics 1: At Philadelphia, see above.
Pirates 8, Phillies 2: The Pirates made short work of the Phillies in front of an excited hometown crowd.
Senators 3, White Sox 1: Chicago’s poor hitting hurt it severely in this game. The hometown Senators struggled against Frank Smith, but wound up putting two across in the bottom of the 8th for the win.
Standings
Cleveland now finds itself in first place, but by the slimmest of margins.
