Brink of Disaster
Apparently no lead is safe, even in 1908.
The Tigers went into the bottom of the 9th inning of this one with a 9-4 lead. But the Tigers managed to come back.
A dizzying rally was capped off by a balk by relief pitcher George Suggs with runners on first and third:
That balk made this a one run game. And Denny Sullivan wasn’t done yet:
Fortunately for Detroit, the Tigers were able to come back in the 10th inning. Claude Rossman delivered the game winning blow:
And that was the end of this wild and crazy affair.
Ed Summers pitched better than the boxscore shows. The 3 errors that Detroit gave up led to the demise of the big lead.
On a personal note, I’m still worried that I’m not bunting enough. We should have more than 2 successful sacrifices in a game like this. The hard part is figuring out how to bunt consistently in a game with 19 runs and 27 hits.
