Coming Through In The Clutch
I haven’t had much to say about the 1908 Cubs so far.
You’d think I’d write about them more often. These were the Cubs of Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance, the team that gave us such memorable figures as Three Finger Brown and Orval Overall.
However, the Cubs just haven’t been able to get it going so far in this replay. They’ve been quiet, and they’ve been hiding in the shadow of the fearsome New York Giant attack.
Well, it was two of those stars that pulled it out this time around.
Orval Overall pitched an excellent game, going 10 innings against the Boston Doves. Boston managed 10 hits, but Orval was able to spread them out efficiently, giving up only 3 runs in the process.
The big accolades, however, went to Frank Chance, who came up in the bottom of the 10th inning with the score tied and runners on second and third. There was only 1 out, so I had him bunt, and this happened:
Chance’s infield single won the game, and might just be enough to get the season turned around for the defending World Champions.
