Diamond Mind Baseball Statistics Guide: Team Batting
Looking at those team batting statistics
Now that we’ve got some of the nasty formulas out of the way, this should (hopefully) be a bit easier.
Diamond Mind Baseball lists a combination of traditional and sabermetric statistics, some of which are easier to understand than others. My goal is to supplement the archaic help file with some more modern information, and, hopefully, to discover some interesting information about modern statistics that might not be common knowledge.
Basic Team Batting
Team: Name of team
AVG: Team batting average
OBP: Team on-base percentage
SPC: Team slugging percentage
AB: Team at bats
R: Runs scored per team. I’ve organized everything by this statistic because it is the most basic measurement of offensive competence.
H: Hits by team
2B: Team doubles
3B: Team triples
HR: Team home runs
RBI: Team runs batted in
BB: Team walks
K: Team strikeouts
SB: Team stolen bases
CS: Team times caught stealing
Sabermetric Team Batting
Name: Team name
G: Games played
PA: Plate appearances
HBP: Times hit by pitch
IW: Times intentionally walked. I’m surprised that the Giants have drawn 11 already.
SH: Number of sacrifice hits per team
SF: Number of sacrifice flies per team
GDP: Number of times grounded into double plays
CI: Number of times players have reached base due to catcher’s interference.
RC: Number of runs created per team. It’s frustrating that this isn’t placed alongside runs scored.
RC27: Number of runs created per team per 27 outs; basically, Runs Created as a per-game rate statistic.
ISO: Isolated power, which we talked about last time. This is slugging percentage minus batting average.
TAVG: Total average, which we talked about last time. Remember that this statistic is seen as having limited utility today.
TB: Number of total bases.
R/G: Number of runs per game. Again, it would be nice to see this as the number of runs per 27 outs in order to compare this with RC27.
Still More Sabermetric Team Batting
Name: Team name
OPS: Team on-base percentage plus slugging percentage, which, as I said last time, correlates well with runs scored.
PA/G: Plate appearances per game. Obviously, the better your offense is, the higher this will be.
AB/G: At bats per game. Not quite as meaningful as PA/G because it discounts walks.
BIP: Number of balls in play.
IPAVG: Batting average on balls put in play, excluding home runs. Again, the pitching version of this has gained more currency over the years.
TBW: Total bases plus walks. As you may recall, the utility of this statistic is very questionable.
TBW/PA: Total bases plus walks divided by plate appearances.
TBWH: Total bases plus walks plus times hit by pitch.
TBWH/PA: Total bases plus walks plus times hit by pitch, all divided by plate appearances. The utility of this is really in question in my opinion.
K/BB: Walk to strikeout ratio for hitters. This can be useful for crazy seasons like 1949.
That wasn’t too bad, was it? We’ll tackle the pitchers next time.
