Extra Innings
I didn’t think they’d be able to pull it off.
The Giants seemed to threaten in every single inning in this game, but could never quite make it work.
Twice they had runners on first and third with only 1 out, and twice their hopes were dashed. The Doves even managed a rally in the top of the 10th inning that looked dangerous, but was eventually extinguished.
Mike Donlin managed to single in the bottom of the 11th inning. That brought up Fred Tenney:
I always forget to tell the batter not to steal in situations like this. Of course, it makes no sense for Tenney to attempt to steal given this situation, since his run doesn’t matter. Oh well.
That brought up Art Devlin:
And that was the game winner.
The Giants had 11 hits and still almost lost. What a game.
Other Action
Red Sox 11, Highlanders 10: At Red Sox, the home team blows a 9-1 lead to go down 10-9 in the top of the 8th, only to come back in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the 9th. Highlanders third baseman Wid Conroy winds up sitting on the bench with his .123 batting average, being replaced by George Moriarty, who goes 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs. Watch the game here. Read the summary here.
White Sox 3, Browns 1: At Chicago, Frank Owen pitches an excellent complete game, giving up only 5 hits, 1 run, and 1 walk while striking out 3. Watch the game here.
Naps 7, Tigers 1: At Cleveland, the Naps feast on Ed Summers, winning this game easily. Watch the game here.
Giants 2, Doves 1 (11): At New York, see above.
Phillies 4, Superbas 2: At Philadelphia, a bases loaded double by pitcher Lew Richie puts the Phillies out in front in the bottom of the 7th. Richie allows only 3 hits and strikes out 5 in his complete game win.
Pirates 2, Cubs 1: At Pittsburgh, the Pirates win their second straight against the Cubs. Chicago scores one with two out in the top of the 9th, but it’s far too little, far too late. Watch the game here.
Reds 5, Cardinals 0: At St. Louis, Andy Coakley throws a masterful 4 hitter as the Reds make short work of the Cardinals. Cincinnati has won 8 straight.
Athletics 10, Senators 5: At Washington, the Athletics win an incredibly ugly game, marred by 8 runs and 7 walks by both teams combined. Watch the game here.
Standings
Every time I think somebody is going to take control of the American League, they wind up losing and dropping in the standings.
