Hero Of The Day
Okay — so maybe Sherry Robertson wasn’t one of the greatest players of all time.
I mean, just look at him:
This doesn’t exactly scream “star player” to me.
But we should let him have his day in the sun.
The Senators came into the bottom of the 9th inning down by a run.
I honestly wasn’t expecting much. Washington has been horrible all year, and was a really bad team in real life as well.
The White Sox haven’t been much better, but they looked okay in this one. The score was 5-1 Chicago after 6. However, Washington exploded for 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, tying the game up in a surprising manner.
Chicago manufactured one in the top of the 8th, making the score 6-5.
And then it happened.
After Sam Dente walked, Buddy Lewis came up with one out and a man on first:
John Simmons was the next batter, pinch hitting for Eddie Yost, who is on the wrong side of .180:
Well, at least John didn’t hit into a double play. There were two men out now, and the pitcher’s spot was due up.
And it was Robertson’s turn to shine as a pinch hitter:
It was a really anti-climatic way to describe a great ending. Sure, the Senators aren’t going to do anything this year — but isn’t that all the more reason to enjoy these moments when they do come about?
Surprisingly, there were only 6 walks total in this game, 3 by each team. The 28 combined hits were another interesting surprise. And I’m not entirely sure I understand why the computer manager insisted on sticking with Klieman until the bitter end.
