How Did Casey Do It?
I’ve concluded that the 1949 Yankees are cursed.
Look at what they’ve done for me lately:
Lost in 12 innings in Cleveland on June 11, 3-1
Lost the first game of a doubleheader in Cleveland on June 12, 7-6
Lost the second game of the same double header, also by a run
Beat the White Sox at home on the 14th, though Chicago had the tying run thrown out at the plate for the final out
Lost to the same White Sox 3-1 on the 15th
And then there was this one:
I don’t even know where to begin.
Bill Wight, the White Sox starting pitcher, is an awful hitter.
He did this in the top of the 7th:
I’m not sure what Reynolds threw him on a 3-2 count, but I’m sure he regretted it.
Wight, by the way, did not hit any home runs in real life in 1949:
In fact, he never hit a home run in his entire Major League career:
The crushing blow, however, came against ace reliever Joe Page, at the hands of Joe Tipton, of all people:
The Yankees were in first place a week before this. They’re now 3 1/2 games out, and are falling fast.
And I’m not sure if they’re going to recover.
So how did Casey do it?
