Howie Pollet Triples Twice
I had an odd situation a little while ago when Howie Pollet of the St. Louis Cardinals homered against Pittsburgh. I made a video about it here:
Somebody mentioned that it’s probably not a huge deal, despite the fact that Pollet never hit a home run in either the major leagues or the minor leagues.
I took a closer look at his statistics, and noticed something else that was odd:
No, it’s not his wartime service, or the fact that he hit .400 in 15 at bats with the Cubs in 1955.
The interesting thing is that he hit the grand total of 2 triples in his career — and both of them came in 1947.
But it gets better.
Both triples came in the same game.
July 25, 1947
This is the game:
Pollet went 3 for 4, scoring a run and rapping out two triples.
Even The Boston Globe seemed impressed:
My question is whether this has ever happened before or since. Has there ever been another pitcher who hit the only two triples of his career in the same game?
Any ideas?
