Longball
This is going to be another quick one.
The Phillies came up in the top of the 9th inning trailing, 7-5. However, you might remember that game against the Cubs a few days ago. The Phillies are certainly capable of coming back from that kind of deficit.
Andy Seminick led things off for the Phillies, giving rise to one of my favorite play-by-play lines in Diamond Mind:
That made it a 7-6 game, and there were still 3 outs to go.
After an out was made, Bill Nicholson came up:
That set things up for Dick Sisler:
You know, as good as the Giants have been early in this season, I still wince every time I see them try to turn a double play.
Up next came Willie Jones, now with two men out and one on first:
And that was it.
The most interesting thing about this game was the 8 home runs hit by both teams combined. The Phillies did wind up with 13 hits in the end, but they were one or two short of changing the result.
Other Action
Indians 7, White Sox 4: At Chicago, the Indians scored 3 in the top of the 9th to cap off a huge win. Watch the game here.
Tigers 3, Browns 2: At St. Louis, the Browns fell just short. Read the summary here.
Dodgers 4, Braves 2: At Boston, the Dodgers continue to make a major move in the standings.
Cubs 2, Reds 1: At Cincinnati, the Cubs win a quiet game between two lousy teams.
Giants 7, Phillies 6: At New York, see above.
Cardinals 18, Pirates 5: At Pittsburgh, the Pirate slide continues, as the Cardinals simply pound the Buccos. Watch the game here.
Standings
Well, we’ve seen it all turn around in the National League, as the Giants have finally taken the lead.
Brooklyn is still making a move, although the 5 game deficit is really hard to overturn if the Giants keep winning.
Meanwhile, in the American League, 5 teams are within striking distance, as the Yankees have suffered a sudden reversal of fortunes.
