May 23, 1949 Day In Review
Sometimes you just don’t get a game good enough to write about.
That’s what happened to me as I played through May 23, 1949. The games were entertaining, sure. However, none of them really stood out. I don’t have much to highlight.
And so I’ll leave you with some brief highlights from the day.
My hope is that I won’t have to do this too often in the future. Still, it might happen from time to time. You just can’t predict how the dice are going to tumble.
Action
Red Sox 5, Tigers 0: At Boston, the Red Sox easily blank the Tigers on 7 hits. Joe Dobson throws the complete game shutout. Watch the game here.
White Sox 7, Senators 2: At Washington, Randy Gumpert throws a 5 hit complete game for the White Sox as they tee off the poor Washington pitching.
Indian 6, Athletics 3: At Philadelphia, the Indians tee off Phil Marchildon, taking advantage of 6 walks to hammer the Athletics. Watch the game here.
Browns 8, Yankees 1: At New York, the Browns add to New York’s woes, chasing Vic Raschi before 5 innings were done. Watch the game here.
Braves 4, Cubs 1: At Chicago, the Boston Braves overcome 4 errors to win this one in a laughter. Vern Bickford throws a 4 hitter for the complete game victory: Vern is now 4-1.
Standings
The Giants are starting to pull ahead in the National League, though it might be too early to say for sure. Brooklyn is starting to falter again.
Meanwhile, the Indians have pulled out on top in the American League. The Yankees are 4-6 in their last 10 games, and are suddenly looking extremely vulnerable.
