No Burden Too Heavy
The real life St. Louis Cardinals of 1908 were a really bad team. Manager John McCloskey, featured in the cartoon above, had his work cut out for him.
They’re not that great in this replay, either. In fact, they’re having a hard time with the Reds, who were simply awful at the start of the season.
This one was a close game that went into the top of the 9th tied at 1. However, a one-two punch is all that the Reds needed.
First came Miller Huggins:
Charge that error to Red Murray, the St. Louis right fielder.
The second was John Ganzel:
Ganzel was thrown out trying to steal thanks to the “little c.” But it was too little, too late for the redbirds.
This was a relatively quick game, without a whole ton of power hiting or stolen bases, and with no sacrifices by either side. That’s probably my fault for going too fast.

Phillies 7, Superbas 2: At Philadelphia, the Phillies take advantage of 7 walks by Nap Rucker to win this game by a large margin despite getting only 4 hits. Rucker strikes out 6 to accompany his 7 walks, but it’s not enough to prevent his record from dropping to 0-5.
Cubs 9, Pirates 1: At Pittsburgh, the Cubs burst out of the gates, scoring 9 runs on 15 hits and demolishing Pittsburgh pitching. Watch the game here.

Senators 9, Athletics 3: At Philadelphia, Jack Coombs has the worst start of the season, giving up a ton of hits and runs as the lowly Washington Senators take the Philadelphia Athletics down a notch. Watch the game here.
Standings
The American League remains absolutely tight. The National is mostly a Cubs - Giants race at this point, and it looks like the Cubs are winning it. Chicago still hasn’t lost a game on the road.
