Owen Wilson’s Big Hit
The Pirates had lost 7 straight coming into this game. I was ready to write them off as dead.
However, they sure turned things around.
They went into the top of the 9th inning with a 2-0 lead over the league leading Cubs. And that, of course, is where the trouble started.
Orval Overall came up with nobody out and runners on second and third. You’d think that the pitcher wouldn’t be much of a threat. But you’d be wrong:
Orval’s single put runners on first and third, setting things up nicely for Johnny Evers:
That tied it. The Pirates were able to get out of the inning, but the damage had been done.
And then came Owen Wilson in the bottom of the ninth, with a runner on first:
Wilson’s blast gave the Pirates a 3-2 victory, and is the first good thing I’ve seen from the 1908 Pirates in a long time.
The Cubs have got to be asking themselves how they let this one get away. They outhit the Pirates and outfielded them, and yet somehow have managed to lose.
