Replay Settings
Before we go any further with this replay, I want to explain what my setup is.
I’ve got a pet peeve. I’ve read numerous replay results over the years, in a variety of formats. However, from time to time I run into replayers who don’t say much about how they have conducted their replays.
The truth is that your configuration says a lot about your replay philosophy – and, in some cases, might wind up skewing your project.
Without any further ado, let’s get into it.
Game Engine
I’m playing Diamond Mind Baseball for this replay. There are pros and cons with using Diamond Mind, many of which I will get into as we move along.
I’m using Version 12a, which is the most current updated version of the game. The only modification I’ve decided on using is Jack Wood’s excellent expanded play-by-play, which you can find here.
Game Options
I’m trying to play with settings as close to real baseball in 1949 as possible. As a result, a lot of the silly recent rule changes in baseball are on their way out – in particular, rules regarding extra innings.
I’m using real-life transactions without using real-life lineups. I’ll get into more detail about what this means and why I’m doing it as we move along.
I’ve also turned off the bench playing time system, which I find overly restricting. There are reasons why using it could be helpful, and also reasons to stay away from it. My philosophy is that players who were available to the manager in real life should be available in-game.
I’ve also turned off things that can result in excessive metagaming – the clutch system, for example, and the bullpen warmup rule. This is a replay project, not a test of my managerial skills.
I don’t care much for using player pictures, and won’t use them in any of my Diamond Mind projects.
I do enjoy the pitch-by-pitch system, and will use it without exception. You’d think that would add a lot of time to each game; however, I’ve found it to be more than manageable. More on that in the future.
Finally, I’m going to be the manager of the home team for every game. I’ve also put myself in charge of setting starting lineups for each team – another topic I’ll address in more detail in the future.
More to come in future posts!
