Scorecards For Businesses Only
Though it’s not really about today’s game, I thought the advertisement in the photo above was pretty interesting.
The Pirates weren’t doing all that well in real life in 1949. Maybe The Post-Gazette should have considered making scorecards for individuals as well.
They’re falling apart in this replay, too — even against the lowly Cubs.
The Mighty Cubs
The Cubs aren’t a great team, but they managed to come into the bottom of the 9th of this one with a 5-4 lead.
But the Pirates managed to come back.
It was Wally Westlake who started the comeback:
That brought up Pete Castiglione, with a chance to win it:
Well, that didn’t work. What about Ed Stevens?
Well, the Pirates did it — pulling a game out of the fire at the last minute.
But they still lost.
It was Roy Smalley who delivered the 10th inning blow that put the Pirates away:
And thus the problems in Pittsburgh continue.
I guess I should have taken Rip Sewell out earlier. It’s hard to say. These double headers have made it difficult to effectively manage a bullpen.
The Pirates are hitting the ball, but they’re simply not winning ballgames.
