Specs
The Browns looked sunk in this one.
They came up in the bottom of the 7th inning down 3-1. I thought they didn’t stand a chance — certainly not against the strong Philadelphia Athletics defense.
But you never know what will happen.
Bob Dillinger came up with runners on first and second and one out in the bottom of that inning:
Hank Majeski winding up with an error instead of a double play in that situation was pretty rare. And up next was Jack Graham:
Just like that, we were tied at 3. And the hits just kept on coming. Up next came Whitey Platt:
By the time all was said and done, the Browns had scored 4 runs to go up 5-3, much to my amazement.
Comeback?
The bespectacled Joe Ostrowski pitched well for the Browns in this one. However, he did get in some trouble in the top of the 9th.
Eddie Joost came up with two men out, the Athletics still down 5-3:
That’s not exactly teamwork, but at least it was a run. It was now a one run game, and I was wondering if Specs was going to have to come out.
Majeski was up next, and I decided to leave Ostrowski in there. I figured he could get that final out, and I really wanted to see him get the complete game.
Well, Hank couldn’t redeem himself after that big error, and the Browns won up with the victory.
It was actually a pretty quiet game overall. The only real offensive performance of note was from Athletics starting pitcher Alex Kellner, who went 2 for 3 with a double. Sadly, it wasn’t quite enough to get that extra run.
