The Champions Roll On
If you haven’t noticed, the 1908 Cubs are a really good team.
The two-time defending National League champions have been off to an absolutely stellar start in this replay.
They did pretty well in real life, too:
Coming Back
Good as the Cubs are, they had to come from behind to stand a chance in this one.
St. Louis got out to a quick 2-0 lead in this game, getting two quick runs off Three Finger Brown in the top of the 2nd. The Cubs answered back with one in the 4th, making it a 2-1 game going into the late innings.
And then came the action.
Frank Chance came up to hit with a runner on second and nobody out in the bottom of the 8th.
That double-column double scored the run and tied the game, giving the Cubs a breath of fresh air.
Catcher Johnny Kling was next:
The Cubs now had the lead, and were able to tack on one more. Chicago was up 4-2 going into the top of the 9th.
More Baseball?
However, Brown was tiring.
Leadoff hitter Red Murray greeted Brown with a single and a stolen base:
Murray wound up going 2 for 4 in the game, showing that the Cardinals could still hit.
Up next was Ed Konetchy. I thought about bunting, but figured it was smarter to swing away in this situation.
Well, that worked as good as a bunt. The problem, of course, was that the Cubs had a 2 run lead. Murray’s run didn’t mean all that much.
Up next was Al Shaw:
St. Louis got its run, closing the gap to 4-3. However, Bobby Byrne made the final out, and that was the end of it.
Those 4 errors really cost the Cardinals.
