The Hitless Wonders
Those good old Browns lost a heartbreaker in real life:
It really is seldom that you see a baseball game that exciting. The amazing thing, though, is that we had one just as good in this replay.
The Fateful Seventh
The White Sox came up in the top of the 7th and were served a golden chance to win it.
Catcher Billy Sullivan was up with a runner on second, and got one of those rare Skeetersoft bunt rolls:
You’d think that victory would be certain, wouldn’t you? Well, it doesn’t always turn out that way — especially in 1908.
The obvious move for St. Louis was to intentionally walk Lee Tannehill, the next batter, to load the bases.
That brought up Jake Atz. I probably should have bunted with Atz, but figured it was worth taking a risk with the bases loaded and nobody out.
In true 1908 fashion, Jake popped up for the first out.
And that brought up pitcher Frank Owen:
I decided not to bunt due to the abundance of 13s on Owen’s card. I don’t think a bunt would have saved the White Sox, actually. Unfortunately, Chicago didn’t have a chance again after Owen’s untimely double play.
They don’t call them the “hitless wonders” for nothing. Chicago managed only 7 hits, all of which were nicely scattered by Harry Howell. St. Louis didn’t do much on offense, but it did just enough to get the win, and that’s what counts.
