Thriller in Boston
With the Red Sox a game and a half behind the league leading Cleveland Naps, you knew this was going to be a heck of a game.
Boston got off to a quick lead in the bottom of the second, but were then shocked when the Naps managed to score 4 runs off Fred Burchell in the top of the 7th.
The Red Sox came right back, however. Jack Thoney, pinch hitting for Burchell, walloped a home run to lead off the bottom of the 7th, cutting the lead to 4-2. Doc Gessler promptly tripled, scoring on Bob Unglaub’s sacrifice fly — and it was now 4-3. A base hit, a ground ball advancing the runner, and a double tied up the score.
And on we went to the bottom of the 9th.
With Amby McConnell on first and nobody out, Heinie Wagner came up:
That brought up Harry Lord:
Lord’s fly ball was just deep enough to score McConnell, and the Red Sox took this one.
