Ups And Downs
Life hasn’t been all that good to the 1908 Tigers so far. Life also never seems to go well for the Washington Senators.
Both teams had a big chance in this one, however.
It was 4-2 Detroit in the bottom of the 8th when George McBride came to bat:
McBride had one of those unusual rolls, a double column triple. George managed to hit only .232 in real life in 1908, complete with a .274 slugging percentage. However, he was lucky enough to have the big hit come in a key situation.
McBride then scored when pitcher Wild Bill Donovan threw wildly to the plate after fielding a bunt by Gabby Street:
That made the score 5-4 Washington.
However, that wound up not being quite enough for the Senators. The Tigers came back in the top of the 9th.
It was a series of base hits that put the Senators away. Among them was this big one by Sam Crawford to tie the score:
And then up came Davey Jones with this one:
Crawford was thrown out trying for third, ending the inning. However, the damage was done, and the Senators did not come back.
Charlie Smith is 1-8 so far this season. He was 9-13 in real life, which means he’s had some bad luck. Maybe I should mess around with the Senators pitching rotation?
