When Collections Move On
How can we make sure our collections pass on to those who will appreciate them?
When Collections Move On
I noticed an interesting post on one of the APBA Baseball Facebook groups the other day.
You don’t see a collection like this come up every day. The gentleman who collected these APBA sets, who has unfortunately since passed away, took meticulous care of the sets, including carefully arranging them by year, keeping them in good condition, and labeling all storage boxes appropriately.
This is a far cry from most of the mega collections you’ll see on eBay, where the sets are overpriced, things are stuck in a plastic bag, and you only discover that important parts are missing after you completed your purchase.
The problem? The problem is that the person who inherited this wonderful set of cards is simply not interested in card and dice sims.
So what happens to the cards? Do we split up the collection? Is there anybody willing to buy an extensive collection like this, particularly given the fact that most of these sets are common and are not in high demand?
To me, it feels like a disaster when a carefully curated collection has to be split apart. Having said that — I’m unfortunately not in a position to fly over and save these cards. I think others feel the same.
Have you considered this? Regardless of the game you play, have you ever asked yourself what will happen to your collection when you pass on? Is there a plan? Or will it face years of resellers on eBay and other auction platforms?
Let me know what you think in the comments.
I'M GETTING UP THERE IN AGE AND HAD THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO MY COLLECTON OF STRAT-O-MATIC BASEBALL CARDS WHEN I KICKED THE BUCKET. I HAD A VERY LARGE COLLECTION AFTER BUYING EVERY BASEBALL SET THEY ISSUED OR REISSUED SINCE 1966. I ALSO HAD BEEN PLAYIING THE GAME ON THE COMPUTER MOSTLY SINCE THE 1990'S. I FIGURED THAT MY WIFE WOULD EITHER TOSS THEM IN RECYCLING OR AT BEST GIVE THEM TO GOODWILL. I DECIDED TO SELL THEM BUT DID NOT WANT TO TAKE THE TIME OR TROUBLE TO SELL THEM ON EBAY SO I CONTACTED CHRIS ROSEN AT MOONLIGHT GRAHAM MARKET PLACE. I THINK HE IS THE LARGEST SELLER OF SOM CARDS IN THE COUNTRY AND HE SAID HE WOULD BUY MY WHOLE COLLECTION. HOWEVER HE SAID IT WOULD BE THE LAST LARGE COLLECTION HE WOULD BUY SINCE HE IS ALSO GETTING UP THERE. HIS WEBSITE STILL SAYS HE IS BUYING CARDS SO IF ANY OF YOUR READERS ARE INTERESTED IN SELLING THEY MIGHT CONTACT HIM. HOWEVER I WOULD ASSUME THEY COULD GET MORE SELLING THEM ON EBAY OR FACEBOOK. I DID THIS IN THE SUMMER OF 2023 SO IF YOU WANT TO BUY SOME OF THESE SEASONS I'M SURE HE HAS MANY OF THEM. I HATED TO SEE THEM GO BUT HOPE HE CAN MOVE THEM ALONG TO PEOPLE WHO WANT THEM.
