Proposed 1930 All Star Teams
I found another surprise in that December 1930 issue of Baseball Magazine that I mentioned yesterday.
There was an article reviewing the 1930 season in all of its hard hitting glory. And within that article were proposed all star teams for the American and National Leagues.
First comes the National League team:
And then the American League team:
Note that these are smaller than modern All Star teams, of course, and that they didn’t bother to give us a bench or any backups.
What do you think about these selections? Are they good or bad? Who else would you have included?
Of course, these aren't teams for an All-Star GAME, which might need substitutions or at least pinch-hitters. They're all-league teams, like the pre- and post-season ones still being chosen today.
As for the players here, Wild Bill Hallahan's the only one I'd take issue with. APBA's first 1930 set made him a D, since his ERA was over 4.50 and he didn't win enough games to override that. I wouldn't go that far; with his W, that'd make him their least effective pitcher. I can see why the magazine chose him; he led the pennant-winning Cardinals in victories (with just 15) and led the NL in strikeouts. But both Fitzsimmons and Hubbell of the Giants had better seasons.
