Simon Nicholls and Bad Luck Walsh
Ed Walsh has been anything but good luck for the White Sox during this replay.
He lucked into an early 4-0 lead at the start of this game, only to watch it fade away quickly.
The bottom of the 7th was the most harmful inning for Walsh. The hometown Athletics put up 3 runs in that half inning, tying the score on Danny Murphy’s clutch single:
It all ended in the bottom of the 10th with a bunt by Simon Nicholls with a runner on third. There was no play at the plate, and it was simply all over.
Walsh is now 4-6 in the young season, and seems about as far away from 40 wins as ever. The White Sox, meanwhile, are in big trouble if he doesn’t start winning.

Phillies 5, Pirates 0: The Pittsburgh faithful went home disappointed after this one. Honus Wagner smacked two triples, but the Pirates failed to score a single run. Doves 4, Cardinals 0: Home field advantage didn’t help St. Louis starter Fred Beebe, who walked 8 en route to a 4-0 loss. Boston left a whopping 14 men on base despite getting only 7 base hits, only managing to break the scoreless deadlock in the top of the 7th.
Browns 2, Senators 1: Charlie Smith came close to no-hitting the Browns in this one, going 6 1/3 innings before allowing his first hit. Unfortunately for Charlie and the hometown Washington fans, he promptly gave up 4 hits and 2 runs, providing St. Louis with its margin of victory. Watch the game here.
