I generally like the idea of playing with cards and dice but playing games on the PC and the ease of play it brings plays into my path of least resistance. I did start dabbling with football games on the tabletop and was pleasantly surprised I enjoyed it. Baseball, because I like the day-to-day part of the season it is hard to give up the PC games. But overall I do agree these games are great stress relievers or escape mechanisms
I had not thought about playing with dice & cards for quite some time, but I think you are onto something . I have considered purchasing PBP or APBA, the latter was the first baseball played.
Yeah, give it a try! I'm surprised at how effective it is. There's something nice about shutting off the outside world and just playing with the cards, dice, scorecard, and your own imagination.
My feelings exactly. 5 years ago, I reconnected with tabletop card and dice baseball. I played APBA again after a 30+ year hiatus. It brought me a sense of peace after a series of tough transitions and losses in my personal life. Watching games unfold through the dice rolls reminded me of times with my dad as a kid. Thank you for your posts!
I’ve never had the urge though I do enjoy reviewing sets of APBA cards of seasons I’m replaying or have replayed using DMB. Last year, I even purchased a new set from the fifties — a year I was replaying on the computer.
Excellent post and great comments. I strictly play dice and charts/cards. The pc is used to compile stats. Love the photo for this article. I do the same for my website...I use spiral notebooks, and am 30 games into a draft league using players from the 1938 American Association and the International League. Rolling the dice and watching the game and season unfold are for me part of the fun and joy of playing. Keeping score by hand is by far one of my favorite things on earth that I do!
I did rate both leagues. I play a game called "Extra Innings." One of its selling points was they included the formula to rate your own players. The ratings are in the form of roster sheets. I created an excel spreadsheet that will rate 400 players at a time, and which is available as a free download at my website http://5ybaseball.magix.net/public/ (hope you don't mind my shameless plug). My website is an homage to EI, but I also have a couple of articles about APBA, Strat, and Statis-Pro. I enjoy reading your blog, and I hope to see more articles like this one, as the enjoyment of this hobby is sometimes difficult to describe to others, even if I sit them down and roll a game with them! It's refreshing to read blogs devoted to this, as well as the Dephi Forums.
‘I find myself better able to sleep, to think clearly, and to enjoy my life once I’ve played.’ Honestly, what’s not to like about this? More power to your dice rolling!
He had a few seasons /41 was very good - getting the Braves over 500 seems challenging - the ballpark is a factor surely but the Braves appear outgunned
Absolutely, computer as everything was for convenience, speed and stats. As I age those become less important and the journey of the replay more attractive. I'm on holiday in Europe for 3 weeks and before sleep I get my mind right by loading 1938 up on BR and look at the teams. When I left home I had started a replay of the season that was really fun using different games and 2 Negro League teams. Only 3 games in I pick a team to think about in depthly from perspective of how a manager would at the start of the season, "Casey Stengel hopes Vince Dimagio can take another step forward in year 2. " I then fall asleep and often dream about these teams. Total escape.
Vince never really did much for the old Boston Bees, did he? Casey must have had grey hairs from the 134 strikeouts and the .228 batting average in 1938.
WAR loves him, though. He had a 2.4 WAR despite an OPS+ of only 95 that season. I'm guessing this was because of his arm in center field, since I doubt WAR gave him much of a boost for the one inning he played at second.
My forms of play don't involve playing games (except sometimes socially), but they do provide that refuge from the stresses and challenges of life. In fact, I got into watching baseball back in 2010 during a very high-stress time. It really helped me get past that, and I ended up getting very interested in learning more about the game.
I should probably make some more progress first, haha — there wouldn't be much to report about my latest long term project.
However, I should have a video coming out in the next few days about the original (1950 season single column) version of APBA Baseball. I wrote this article after replaying the 1950 World Series.

I sure could use a stress reliever.

Did you make your own AA and IL cards?

Sure was a great hitter in the PCL, though.

Thanks for sharing. Would love to hear more about the project or just the games you are replaying. A few articles about that would be fun.
