I think it was a combination of the stress of trying to get something new out before the season began each year and how exhausting going through an infinite number of bar room arguments with other baseball fans was.
James continues to encounter a lot of critics of his methods — including me, lol. Back in the 1980s he was stepping on a lot of toes and riling up a lot of people. It was clearly too much for one man to manage; in fact, the 1988 Abstract is filled with contributions from others.
