I know that there's a committee behind updating the online version of the book. Frankly, though, it needs an actual editor — somebody who will go through the book from beginning to end and read it as if they were a normal reader.
As I read it, I am amazed how badly it is put together. Now I could never put it together in the first place but writing a book and editing one are two distinct skills. Also, in the original book there were a bunch of David Lawrence essays that never made it to the online version. Considering how trivial it would be to add them, I can only imagine that David never gave permission to publish them online; I just wish they would say so rather than pretend that they are forthcoming. Sadly the original book is probably in a box at my parents' house as I would never have thrown it out but to look for it would be daunting
The 'a' refers to the sequence of fonts used. Since NP was first, it would get the 'a' designation.
But it's a different font from the original 1950 APBA season, which also has the "a" designation.
The biggest problem here is that these designations aren't actually defined anywhere. It feels like the book is missing an introduction.
It is amazing how badly they botched the online version of the book, but Ed Zack must be spinning in his grave
