Tiger Attack
This was yet another game that came down to the wire.
Detroit went into the bottom of the 9th inning down a run. New York starting pitcher Vic Raschi was on the mound, though he hadn’t pitched as well as he would have liked.

Up came Johnny Lipon with one out. And that’s where things get interesting:
Did I make the right decision? Should I have had Kell try to score? Or should I have played it safe?
Kell wasn’t close to scoring. He did help the Tigers stay out of the double play. But was it worth it?
That brought up rookie Johnny Groth:
And that’s how this wild one ended.
It amazes me that Vic Raschi could win despite giving up 5 walks like that. The Tigers got their hits, but simply couldn’t string them together.

Dodgers 4, Cubs 0: Preacher Roe delighted the hometown crowd by shutting down the Cubs on only 4 hits.
Braves 9, Reds 0: Vern Bickford made short work of the Cincinnati Reds, shutting them out on only 4 hits in front of a partisan Boston crowd. Though they’re still a long way away from first place, the Braves have now won 4 in a row and are looking good.
Cardinals 5, Giants 3: The Polo Grounds fans were upset at this one, as the Cardinals made quick work of the Giants. Enos Slaughter led the way with a 4 for 5 outing. Watch the game here.
Phillies 5, Pirates 4: Robin Roberts threw a complete game for the hometown Phillies, who led this one the whole way. The lone Pirate highlight was Ralph Kiner hitting his 23rd home run:
