Art Fromme Does It Alone
The Cardinals won this game through a miracle.
It was a two base error by Billy Maloney with the bases loaded that did it, turning a 1-0 defeat into a miracle victory:
But that’s not the real story.
Fromme’s Crazy Start
Cardinals Pitcher Art Frome had a bizarre start.
I mean, just look at the boxscore:
It’s really not common for 1908 games to feature a pitcher who walks 6 and strikes out 7.
It’s also kind of odd that the Superbas didn’t score more runs. There were no double plays. Brooklyn managed to leave 9 men on base, and their only run was a manufactured run in the top of the 1st. Hummel singled, Jordan bunted him over, and Sheehan knocked him in — and that was it.
I suppose Art Fromme figured that he didn’t need his defense. He really didn’t, as a matter of fact. Brooklyn only managed a single hit after that 1st inning: a useless single by Harry Pattee that amounted to nothing.
Both these teams are lousy. The Cardinals were just a little bit better today.
